Will-i-am Promises To Rejuvenate Your iPhone Camera

Did you know that Intel hired Black Eyed Peas singer Will-i-am as it's new Director Of Creative Innovation? Yeah neither did I. I had assumed that it would be a largely fake position where Will-i-am would basically be a sort of ambassador of the company hawking their new stuff. 

That may largely be true, but he just made a bold claim that he will soon be releasing a Camera Add On for the iPhone that will turn it into a "genius phone" with it's own 14MP sensor and an upgraded flash. This will apparently be the first in an all new line of i-am branded products.

If you own the D600 from Nikon you are probably left with 2 impressions. The first being that it seems to be a great camera, and the second that it sure gets dust on the sensor pretty easily.

The general consensus is that it is a flawed design involving the shutter or the mirror box. That there is some scraping going on, and the dust particles are actually tiny bits and pieces of the coating on the shutter doors, or the housing that they slide into. There is also some thought that it could come from the flapping of the mirror in the mirror box. (I can hear Sony users laughing as they read the mirror theory.)

Lensrentals.com reported that usually about 1 in every 4 camera rentals needs a sensor cleaning after it comes back from being rented. But not so in the case of the D600. Every single one them needed cleaning.

Kyle Clements released a video on Youtube showing how a brand new camera out of the box, having one lens mounted to it and never having it removed, generated some serious dust in just the first 500 shots. Considering that the inside was never exposed from a lens change, that is pretty bad. You can see that video below.

Imaging Resource reached out to Nikon after the video release and asked for a comment on the dust and showed them the video. Nikon responded with the following....

"Measures to reduce effects of dust or foreign matter are optimized for each model. Therefore, the dust reduction system's internal mechanism varies with each model," the Nikon statement reads. "If the effects of dust or foreign matter on photographs become bothersome, customers are encouraged to consult their local Nikon service center."

Wow... So after 500 to 1000 shots, I should send it in for a cleaning to a Nikon Service Center? Does that not sound a little crazy to you?

Guns For Cameras?

The Canadian city of Winnipeg has decided that it wants to reduce gun violence in it's city. So it has decided to hand out cameras in trade for your guns. Bring in a working firearm, and get a Panasonic point and shoot valued at about $130.

Now this may be just my red state / red neck mentality thinking here, but if I had a gun that worked and I wanted to rid myself of it, I am sure I could get more than $130 for it, unless it was maybe the most wore out .22 pea shooter.

Me thinks they are only going to get junk. But if they want to give away cameras, and you have a worn out rat shooter that you want to unload, this might be a good time.

I refuse to debate the whole gun violence thing. I know many of you lean to the left on this issue, and I respect your opinion, so that is not what this post is about. It is to let you know that if you have some junk you want to relieve yourself of, Winnipeg city officials will give you a shiny new vacation camera in trade.

The mars rover Curiosity, snapped the below image. It is a composite image consisting of 52 images. Each one consisting of a 2MP snap. Initially I questioned why, in todays modern age of cameras, they would use something so yesterday in the design of the cameras. I guess those rocket scientist know what they are doing. Almost every image we have seen has consisted of lower res images stitched together into higher ones. It has something to do with the ease of sending smaller packets of data over 140 million miles, rather than the larger that a large resolution sensor would do.
